The long-term goal of the S-DOC is to mobilize community-based organizations to engage their respective ethnic communities to undertake healthier cancer control behaviors. Because cancer control plans are guided by risk factors such as age, gender, ethnicity, as well as, access to care (screening, nutrition, and vaccines), and because cultural barriers (including language) affect efficient adoption, a one-day meeting cannot formulate specific activities that participants should adopt. Rather, this symposium will forge a broad and durable consensus that cancer control should be “on the agenda” of any organization concerned with community health. Follow-up will decide the specific ways in which an organization engages. Those working with youth, for example, may begin vaccination campaigns, while organizations with an older constituency may educate about colorectal screening.

Another objective of the S-DOC is to commit institutional stakeholders, including providers, insurers, employers, faith-based groups, public health agencies, organized labor, etc., to form partnerships with community organizations to advance cancer control behavior. Partners may agree to provide financial support for educational campaigns, facilitate access to screening or vaccinations, offer expert educators for “train-the-trainer” models of community education, or provide other resources that are required for cancer control outreach.

The Diversity Coalition will organize and conduct the Sacramento Dialogue on Cancer to share information regarding Sacramento cancer health disparities and lay the foundation to create a Sacramento Cancer Control Plan. Scheduled discussion panels will cover:

  • Disparities in cancer incidence, mortality and survival for various racial/ethnic and socio-economic groups in Sacramento County/Region
  • Disparities in risk factors for cancer such as tobacco use, poor nutrition and lack of physical activity
  • Socio-economic factors that contribute to health disparities such as access to health insurance and cancer care services
  • Evidence based programs in cancer prevention and early detection
  • Community barriers to cancer prevention and early detection information and services
  • Potential strategies to reduce disparities in access to cancer prevention and early detection information and services
